Ok, I assume you have a Hub or a Router that shares the internet. (You can just hook the xbox directly to the modem, but then no one else gets internet ) To hook up the Xbox to a network, you need a specific ethernet cable. There are two types: patch cables and crossover cables. patch cables hook up to hubs, routers, and other LAN type jacks. Crossover cables hook DIRECTLY from one computer (or xbox) to another. The reason its like this is because of the way the actual wires inside the cables are placed. Patch cables go from A to A and B to B. Crossover cables "cross over" the wires, so that A goes to B and B goes to A. Go to www.xbchelp.com/network/ and tell me what setup you have. This website should also give you an idea of what you need to set up your network. Just on a minor note, anyone else who wants to play online DOES NOT HAVE TO BUY XBOX LIVE. www.xbconnect.com has a FREE application for using "system link" to play online. Dont misunderstand me, I am gald you got Live, because it PWNS the free way of doing it, the downloads, clan support, server finding... but for everyone else, if you just cant get Live, go to that website and we can play online without having to sign up to anything.

and just so you know halø, you WILL need someone with a credit card or bank card to register the account. (this is to make sure someone over the age of 18 has given you permission to get online. plus, once you subscription runs out, another yearly charge is billed to the card. lso, if you want to downlaod any of the "premium" downloads (they cost money) then it will bill that card too.)
-edit-
i am using Setup B for my xbox, in case you are wondering
-edit edit- The credit card is for Live, not for xbox connect. You dont need to do anything for XBC but download & install.

1- did you go to the link i gave above about networks and how to set them up?
2- you are using a patch rj-45 cable and not a crossover rj-45 cable, right?
3- your firewall, if you have one, shouldnt be a problem, but you never know.
